Medium Talk

Let's say it's the first time that I've met....X. I walk up to X give them my hand and go through the usual 'hi' 'my name is...' 'what's your name?' 'what do you do?'s'. This goes on for about 10 minutes or so depending on how forthcoming the person is. I'm sure that you know that this period of time is commonly referred to as 'small talk'. However I feel that I need to invent a phrase to describe the next stage of conversation. I shall call it 'medium talk'. It occurs once you've exhausted all of the topics which you're certain that the other person will have something to say about eg their school/job. It's a natural progression and the 'medium talk' is the most dangerous territory of bond formation. You see it's because you have to try and give a bit of yourself away while making sure not to give too much away. Most people say that it's all in the first impression. Yes I agree with that but even if you've made a good first impression and you've mastered the small talk if you come out and say something far too bold for them to handle then it will not end well.

Most likely they'll pretend that their Grandma is in hospital or they'll do that really awkward thing which I absolutely detest. That's when they just trail off into..... nothing. Then I automatically leap into fill the silence when in reality they're really trying to escape since I've become the over talkative freak. I wish that there was no medium talk. It's very difficult because you inevitably have to pretend to be interested in things that you're really not interested in in order to proceed to the next stage. The big talk stage. It's when you can literally say whatever is on your mind and you know that you won't get any weird looks and that they'll always try and give you a 'p' laugh even if it is probably the lamest thing that they've ever heard. It's the caring progression. When they care then they listen rather than thinking about what they could possibly say to fill the next silence.

  1. Interesting proposal. This 'medium talk' thing could really take off...you could promote it the way our Enterprise worked last year haha :)
