Pukeko vs Duck

At Fox's paddock I'm always interested to have a look at the wildlife around abouts. Of course there's all of the horses but there's also a well established Duck and Pukeko population. They've been mutually coexisting quite happily for most of the year... until now. See at first I thought it was adorable. All of the baby pukeko and ducks running around together. I mean they were all so adorable. I mean the pukekos are all black and fluffy and the duckling are so little and fluffy that I just want to steal one!

Then I saw the dark side of the ducks and pukeko living together. It happened a few days ago and quite simply has shaken my sense of ideals to the core. I was idly walking fox back to his paddock when I saw a pukeko approach a Mummy duck and her ducklings. It edged towards the ducks resembling a tyrannosaurus Rex. I thought it may be wanting to just say 'hi' so I didn't think too much of it. Then right in front of my eyes I saw the pukeko reach down and grab one of the ducklings in it's reptilian beak. The parent ducks started flapping their wings and attacking the pukeko to no prevail. In no time at all the pukeko had proudly run away with the duckling dangling lifeless in it's beak.

I tried to hit the pukeko with a rock. Unlucky for the duckling it was too late. Then to my horror I saw the pukeko begin to eat the duckling. Meanwhile the parent ducks were forced to retreat and lament the loss of their youngest duckling.

I now no longer like pukeko.

  1. Okay that story about the Pukeko eating a duckling is pretty gross and kind of sad but I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be trying to take out NZ native birds, they're having enough trouble as it is...

  2. I know the feeling.

I take my son down to the lake by our house here in Australia where we like to feed the Pukeko and Ducks. Today we saw a mother duck with her ducklings in tow.

So we start feeding the birds as we often do when suddenly a Pukeko charges up from the pond and grabs a duckling, I couldn't believe it. First I tried to throw a big bit of bread at it in the hope it would distract it enough to drop it but to no avail. I then resorted to stones and at one point the duckling was dropped but sadly just as quickly regathered and dragged to a small bush in the middle of the pond where the Pukeko proceded to eat the poor duckling.

It's like finding out Santa isn't real.
