There's a problem with being too independent which is often overlooked by the flashy power point presentations and the motivational Marsden Old Girl who was dux and head girl and the youngest CEO of an international banking firm. That is that sometimes you just need to lean on people not physically of course unless you happen to have sprained your ankle/wrist/nail or any injured any other part of your body which prohibits walking (not too sure about the broken nail). Sometimes it's just nice to know that although you're running determinedly on your own if you run head first into another student and knock yourself out then there will be someone there to catch you. And vice versa it's nice to think that you're there for other people as well.
It's a balance really you don't want to be so independent that you never rely on anyone for anything or so dependent that you rely on everyone for everything (that's just so annoying and clingy).
Dependence is a weird thing like cheese in a can. One never really thinks of it as a good thing (although cheese in a can is just wrong). Personally I think you need to depend on your friends a little bit and depend on your family a little bit and that it the rain will stop at 3.30 in time for you to walk home since you forgot your umbrella or the wind murdered it. You need to depend on things so some of the world is out of your control and you can enjoy those little or large surprises.
Finally... my strategy worked. I'm going to GYLC in New York/DC next year. So I'm kind of effervescing like francium in water (although that just explodes...). The awesome thing is this whole GYLC thing has gotten everyone who wants to go interested in economics. Why you ask? Because of the crashing American dollar/rising New Zealand dollar which means that as each day passes it gets cheaper and cheaper to go. SCORE. I can't wait to go. It will be legend wait for it DARY (complete with hand actions of course...)
Quote/Conversation of the day in front of the toasted sandwich maker
Agnes: Hi
Me: Hello why are you here?
(She didn't have a sandwich)
Agnes: Because I wanted to talk to you.
Me: Why?
Agnes: Because I like you. In fact I would almost say that I loved you (purely platonically of course) I'd be very sad if you died.
internal aww
Me: I'd be sad if you got hit by a bus too.
Enter Phoebe at some point
Me: Agnes just said she liked me
Phoebe: Why?
Me: Do you like me?
Phoebe: No
She makes meanness an art form that one...lol (I feel the necessity to write that to amplify the point that actually Phoebe is a nice person although not as nice as Agnes...post aww she wins the Camilla kindness prize!)
