Yesterday I was talking to people as I do and asked them the simple question is it better to a nerd or is it better to be a geek? I suppose most normal people who don't fit into the elite stereotype of geek/nerd would say it doesn't matter. But it's like in the pilot of Chuck when Sarah says 'you geeks are good' and then Morgan and Chuck hastily reply 'Nerds I would say nerds. Nerd herd...' This is one case however when I think I disagree with Chuck. See nerd has a far more nasally noise so it sounds like someone who spent 60 hours straight playing dungeons and dragons on their PC and I'm most certainly not that kind of nerd. Plus I just realised that there is such a negative stigma attached to Nerd/Geek. Recently I was just chatting away as I do and unintentionally offended everyone by saying I'm a geek and then using the inclusive pronoun 'we'. It worked for Obama to bring people together but for me it did just the opposite. I don't think people like being called Geeks/Nerds. It's like religion you find it in your own time and eventually accept that you're a Geek/Nerd. You get ushered into the fold of reading articles on your Dell inspiron desktop comparing Internet Explorers (Chrome for life) or comparing operating systems and how can I forget you dream of going to Comic Con in San Diego. And just like all of those other nerds/geeks that will be there you'll dress up.
In some regards it's also like a cult. You share highlights from your favorite TV show or the current exchange rate for the US dollar. Then you're also intimidated by hanging out with non nerds. I must admit I've taken to asking people if they're nerd/geeks that usually terminates the relationship unfortunately. OR pretenders who are even worse. They act all cool but secretly they're watching Chuck on sidereel and wearing their Buy More T in the safety of their own bedroom. They're scared. But I must admit it's great to be out and proud (in a non sexual purely geeky/nerdy way). After all it's just like Bryce says 'it's the year of the geek'. Oh and I think I'm a geek rather than a nerd. Geek just sounds so much cooler.
PS Chuck just got an order of 6 additional eps for season 3 bringing the order up to 19. YAY. If you're shaking your head right now then what can I say? I'm a geek.
