Well I guess my less than subtle title and the gigantic picture above has kind of given away the awesomeness that went down in Palmerston North today. It was honestly the best day of the year. I never thought that it would happen. I've been infuriated that Wellington got snow and Palmy didn't. Then this afternoon at about four 'o' clock it finally happened.
Best day ever.
I was on my way to go ride fox. It started sleeting. I thought to the universe 'pah that's pathetic'. I kept on walking. My hands were getting progressively colder and colder and colder until they began to turn a terrifying shade of red. Still I kept on walking. Then I saw some little flurries that got caught in the wind. A part of me still thought that it was just sleet. But then I caught one. It was a magnificently light lump of glossy, white snow. At that point I thought to the universe 'oh but it really doesn't count unless it settles'. So I kept on walking still.
My jodhpurs were wet and I started to collect snow on my jacket. Although I only accepted that it was actually fully snowing when I saw little wondrous piles of snow begin to collect in Fox's paddock. I think I just thought that it was too wonderful to be true. Snow's something that happens in the mountains or in the Northern Hemisphere never outside my bedroom window.
As soon as I got back to the hall I fully embraced the snow. My legs were saturated and I had a snow hat on my hood. For the first time in my life I made a snow angel! I didn't care that my pants and top were getting kinda muddy and that I had a serious case of brain freeze. It was flipping snowing! It just doesn't happen in New Zealand. The next hour or so was a blur of snow ball fights and rapidly dashing from one place to another in case the snow suddenly disappeared. The best moment was when we made it to the field (pictured below). There was enough snow there to make a person sized snow man! Someone even made a ski jump and then jumped off of it on skis! Although he kinda knocked himself out when he tried for a second time... Everyone was just out and around the campus high on life and enjoying the snow. It's a once in a lifetime occurrence. And it's just so cool! It's a winter wonderland outside my bedroom window. It's so strange to be able to say that. The smile hasn't left my face today.
As soon as it started snowing I rang my Mum and I shouted out with glee that it was snowing! Of course at home the lawn's covered in the stuff. But I was all set for Palmerston North to disappoint me yet again. But no! Snow, snow glorious snow. The one thing that cracked me up though was that the South Islanders tried to be too cool and all like 'yeah it's snow... so?' but you could tell that they were secretly as excited as the rest of us. Today was the kind of day that I can reflect back on in years to come and be able to say 'hey, remember when it snowed in Palmerston North?'
3 Good Things
*SNOW
*Wondrous Steamed Pudding! Thank you Lauren!
*An exciting power cut which just added to my snow excitement. Let's hope the snow is the gift that keeps on giving and tomorrow we have a 'snow day'! It's always been my dream :D
