Massey University is particularly cunning. You see all of those years ago when they were setting up the university in the Manuwatu/Palmerston North area they decided against buying a plot of land in the centre of Palmerston North. Some people would argue that it was because of the high land prices or perhaps in order to buy land for the agriculture courses. However I beg to differ. You see the inconvenient location was a very cunning ploy to ensure that Massey students were smarter and fitter than all of the other students. You see when you're on campus there's only two possible things to do. Exercise and Study. The library has a non existent 'reading for pleasure' section so you can't really read to pass time. The internet is rather shocking... comparable to the internet on my Granny's farm except for the fact that Massey internet crashes... often... Although that may just be my bedroom....Palmy proper is a ten minute bus ride away. It doesn't sound that bad but when you take into account the less than reliable public transport then it creates quite a barrier from Palmerston North. Essentially that means that you don't really go bowling, to the movies, shopping etc. Although it does mean that students save quite a bit of money so YAY. The distance is also incredibly annoying because it seems like it's close enough to walk. So that's another way that you have to do the whole exercise thing.
One of Massey's strengths happens to be in sports. It has frequent free gym classes (like the killer one I mentioned yesterday) with a gym membership. It's got a running track and today I discovered that they're building a velodrome. So it's fair to say that sports are their forte. It's pretty much the main thing that you do on campus. After you've finished your classes then you take a relaxing walk down to the gym and exercise. Exercise isn't just confined to the gym either. Whenever anyone has ever talked to me about university then they've always followed it up with 'make sure that you get involves'. I'm always one to follow advice from seemingly important looking people so when it came to clubs day I was rather eager. I went around on the lookout for a debating club, a french club (since I love the language and the associated tasty treats) or even a medieval reenactment society. To my horror no such clubs existed. Instead I found the alpine club (think caving, tramping and skiing... I kind of want to join...), the handball club, basketball, netball.... pretty much every kind of sport you can think of even ultimate Frisbee (I joined that one). If you want to expand your CV it seems like you kind of have to do sport. Everything is very sporty. I must admit that I felt rather intimidated when I found out how many people in my hall have been representatives. I fear that all of this sportiness may have a positive influence on me and I won't be able to go into my usual winter hibernation.
I really am being forced to study. It's marvelous I suppose. I think the fact that a large majority of my fellow hall peeps are doing vet has got to help quite a bit though. They frequently force one another into their rooms to do some much needed study since they know that they're competing against the really socially awkward people who NEVER leave their rooms. I like to follow the urgings since it's rather fun to pretend that I'm a wannabe vet.
3 Good Things
*A beautiful run which was only meant to be 3.5k and ended up being 7k. Nevertheless the scenery was stunning and I left just as the sun was setting. One thing that I must admit about Massey is that it really is beautiful country around here. The bush is just a hop skip and a jump away. My goodness the view on my run was beautiful.
*Hot cross buns = Hot cross YUMS
*4 hours of lectures/tutorials going rather ridiculously fast so yay!
