Words. Thats what I've decided to name this post. By that of course i mean weird outsidely rounded dens/shacks....Just kidding by the way before you think I've fallen so far off the wagon that I can no longer see the wagon or the tracks which showed that the wagon was once there (it's a wagon on a sand road). I mean those tiny little things which make up our day. In fact females on average say 8805 words per day (men only say 6073). It's quite a few. Then you have to take into account the number of words that you read. And I would say that would be well up there in the tens of thousands.
How many words are there? Well the Second Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 obsolete words.
This post is not about how many words I say per day or read per day or hear per day. It's about the massive difference that one very small word can make.
For instance there was someone in my bio class whose mother was shocked by a message she received from her father. He's been using predictive text. So instead of saying 'I've left for home' he typed 'I've left for good'. A little tweensy tiny bit shocking. But I suppose a very handy cocktail story.
Yet thats not really what I wanted to write about either. Although it's kinda to do with it... One word to another person can make their day. Let's say you're having a bad day (defined by my previous post on the topic). So of course you feel absolutely dreadful, depressed and deflated (alliteration score). Then someone comes up to you and says for example 'nice glasses'. These small words just full you with fuzzies. It's a bit like a random act of kindness. But I'm not just talking about compliments. Although those are great. Unless they're creepy. Like someone saying you smell good from behind you...and not in a funny ha ha way
I'm talking about courtesy. I know that now I'm just listing off the virtues of the week. But isn't just so fab when someone says 'hello'? I always try to say hi to everyone just being courteous. The thing that shocks me though are the people who don't say hello back. They just ignore you or kind of grunt. Not too fab. People nowadays just seem far less courteous. No more pleases and thankyou's. It's ever so sad. I know I'm sounding like an 80 year old grandmother but I'm trying to make a point. And while I'm acting like a geriatric. I'm just going to say I hate it when kids listen to their ipods on like the max so you can hear the lyrics even though you don't have the earphones in your ears. It's ruining your hearing. And I don't like parties with ridiculously loud music it's meant to be the background not the essence of the party what about conversation? It's meant to be a social gathering.
Now I'm on that subject. I hate repetitive music. In fact boom boom pow makes me want to take my trusty sledgehammer and smash every copy of the black eyed peas latest album into tiny pieces. And if it comes onto the radio in the morning I leap out of bed despite the sub arctic temperatures. I hate techno. I like music which makes you feel and has some kind of variation. I hate people not doing up their top buttons. It requires minimal effort and it does not kill you. I find extended family members hugging me immensely awkward. And the thing I hate more than anything is incompetence....now i've got that all out in the open....
Talking words. I call for you to talk to someone you haven't in a while and for petes sake don't ignore people. It's just plain mean. Speak vicariously. LOL.
Peace out
