Sometimes when I hear someone speak they make me wonderfully
aware of the fact that the average persons day to day vocabulary is only a few
thousand words. It isn’t because they use simple/ordinary words it’s because
they repeat words and phrases in an incredibly obvious way. I can barely act
all high and mighty when it comes to this. You’ve probably all picked up on the
fact that I have set phrases and styles which I repeat and of course I’m a
sucker for clichés.
Everyone has these little words which they use too often.
They’re like adding potatoes to a meal. Potatoes don’t add any really exciting
flavours or textures but instead they just fill you up so you’re not hungry
anymore. Okay I don’t think that was really a fantastic simile.
The whole reason I was inspired to write about those
annoying words is because they were talking about it on the radio. So in order to
try and expand my vocabulary and stop being so repetitive I think I’m going to
try and become more aware of those annoying words... I do use ‘Ae’ often and ‘like’
(although not in the ditsy American way...) and ‘you know’ (although that’s a
kiwi thing)... Hmm perhaps I should just carry a thesaurus around with me so I
can vary my word usage... Eh I’m sleepy now...
3 things that I learnt today
*Cook rice in boiled water for 12 minutes and it turns out
perfectly.
* A marinade with vinegar, soya sauce, honey, oil, ginger
and garlic tastes rather nice.
