Do you know what sucks? When you wake up with that horrible scratchy-ouchy feeling in your throat. It's a physical sense of foreboding. You're not sick quite yet but you know that soon enough (it may be one day or two) that horrible little virus is going to take you down and you'll be sick in bed for an extended period of time. Nasty little bugger that little influenza isn't it?

I find it particularly rotten because you spend the time leading up to your eventual sickness doing well nothing. For some reason you think that if you go for a run, or a swim or go outside then miraculously that little virus is going to take you down that much faster. I guess it really depends on whether you think there's a clock ticking inside of you and the virus is a bomb of sorts or if it can be defeated by using an accumulation of hot drinks, drugs and sleep. Passive versus aggressive. Either way it sucks because I feel rather ulcky. But I shall keep on going and there is no way that this beastly virus is going to take me down.

What is a virus anyway? A bunch of RNA surrounded by a protein capsid. That's why I always feel particularly bitter when I get a virus. They've got no purpose in life and there's no way that they can justify being mean to us. I can be reasonably okay with getting E coli or being eaten by a tiger. Both creatures need the food to survive and raise their young and ultimately do something that's kind of useful for the world. But what do viruses do with their energy. They reproduce and then they die so that they can reproduce again. there's no interaction with other viruses or doing anything vaguely beneficial in their lifetime. A little bit like paid assassins minus the whole being born and raised and loved thing. Honestly imagine a baby virus being taught morals by its parent. 'Now darling, Remember that you've got specific recognition particles so you can only attack tigers. Perhaps one day your offspring will mutate and be able to attack humans too. That's a big goal. So honey, the only thing you need to think about is to attack the weakest cell and take it down. Treat others as you would not like to be treated.' Ugh I hate viruses I wish I could just go all 9/11 on their asses when they're all getting together to have an infection conference. Although I wouldn't like to die in my pursuit of a virus free world so maybe more like... strategic bomb placement?
