Awkward Smiles

Okay so if you've been following my blog for any period of time then you'd know that my darling horse Fox has moved to Massey University. More specifically the equestrian center. There's always a large amount of people coming and going from the equestrian center; whether they be mucking out, feeding, riding... the verbs go on. Anyway because I'm always keen to meet new people especially new similarly minded people then I try to make sure that I always say 'hello' or throw a (what I hope is friendly) smile their way.

One itty bitty difficulty that I have with this technique is that it's rather awkward for the person on the receiving end. It's unintentional, but I have an incredibly awkward smile. If you want to see what it looks like then just look in a mirror and imagine your mouth is stuffed full of incredibly sour lollies and you're trying to smile at the same time. Yeah, it isn't particularly pretty. I've always faced this issue which is evident from my string of awkward ball photos. I just can't quite fake a smile. Something has to be funny in order for me to laugh and something has to make me happy if I'm going to smile. Perhaps you can see me as a happiness prude? Unfortunate isn't it... I just sometimes like a laugh to be special...Anyway since my smile is so incredibly awkward. Then after I flash my pearly whites the recipient will inevitably flash me a confused/slightly disturbed expression. If I'm lucky then they'll take pity on me and simply be bemused... Usually I'm not so lucky... But after I see their expression I immediately get a goofy grin on my face. It's just so hilarious!

I remember on one ski trip when I was about 8 years old being told that you should fake laugh and smile as much as possible since your body doesn't know the difference. In practical experience I think that smiles work a little bit like the butterfly effect. If you flash an awkward, fake smile then you'll get a weird expression in response which will make it impossible to not burst into a wonderfully goofy grin. Then before you know it the original recipient is smiling too. Before you know it one awkward attempt turns into a wonderful exchange.

Of course when it comes to people who I know then I try to flash them the biggest goofiest grin I can muster. I figure that my pearly whites won't make them feel even a little bit awkward.

3 Good Things
*Hannah and Angela for helping me with excel... I now kind of understand the 'if' function on excel... Damn you Bill Gates for inventing excel and making it so confusing!
*Having a newspaper/student information brochure handy to use as a make shift umbrella. Palmerston North sure does have strange weather!
*Anna and I playing a little prank which involved the words 'I'm watching you...' he he :D.... of course that's in a totally non stalker-ish way...

After Dinner Mint: Loving waking up to the national radio. It's so interesting to actually know what's going on in the world outside of the entertainment industry for once. Plus I find the opening tune for the hourly news oddly catchy... xoxo
